Irrigation and Drainage

36. Fifty five percent of Taiwan's land area has irrigation and drainage facilities, mainly for food production. The government sets aside considerable funds each year for revamping these facilities. Recently, the government has also been promoting dry crop irrigation as part of agricultural upgrading.

37. Taiwan has only limited farmland. To manage these resources better, the government employs a geographical information systems to collect data on drainage capacity, acidity and alkalinity and texture. These can be used to determine which areas are most suited to which crops.
